What’s a Risk Assessment, and How Do I Complete One?

As someone accountable for the safety of people within your facility, you understand the need for a high sense of care and security; assessing potential risks, implementing safety measures, and protecting people and property from various vulnerabilities take top priority. The best way to identify these potential threats is to perform a risk assessment. This process allows you to identify potential fire hazards and develop a plan to minimize risks.

How To Conduct An Assessment

Begin your assessment by identifying the most significant risks to safety, then initiate the steps to mitigate those risks.

Identify Hazards

Identify which classes of fire your facility is most susceptible to so you can determine which fire extinguisher will work best. Be sure to examine your building for potential ignition, fuel, and oxygen sources that could cause a fire to start and spread rapidly.


Identify Those At Risk

Identify risks that pertain to people who are more vulnerable such as children, the elderly, the disabled, or the ill. If anybody in your facility requires special accommodations in an emergency or evacuation, prioritize those needs.


Eliminate Hazards When Possible

Evaluate the likelihood of a fire occurring and the steps your facility would need to take to ensure safety for everyone. It is critical to remove or reduce all hazards that prevent or inhibit people from safely exiting the building.  Additionally, it’s imperative to consider what tools are required in order to avoid, detect, and fight fires - fire alarms, extinguishers, sprinkler systems, and detailed evacuation plans with signage.


Record & Review Assessment

Carefully keep detailed records of the hazards you discover and how you either minimized or eliminated them. Commit to assessing your facility regularly - at least every 12 months -  to ensure your facility is up-to-date with local fire codes and is a safe environment for every occupant.
